Businesses looking to put in place an effective website with bespoke search engine optimisation (SEO) should avoid the temptation of starting with the homepage, it has been claimed.

Chris Lake, writing on the Ecosultancy blog, commented that he finds that an "inside-out" approach is better, those calling in the experts to create custom websites may be interested to hear.

He said beginning with a homepage resembles designing the cover of a novel before writing the first chapter.

Mr Lake explained that this is because this part of a website acts as an aggregator, with those creating custom websites best to start at a "deeper level".

He added: "It makes sense from a search / user perspective too. Many visitors totally bypass the homepage when entering your website, entering instead at an individual page level."

In other website news, earlier this month Hitwise revealed that the MP expenses scandal had boosted search engine enquiries for the Daily Telegraph.ADNFCR-1093-ID-19190975-ADNFCR
