The emergence of e-commerce, on-demand internet television and better internet marketing, could see the online form leap-frog its counterpart, according to a survey.
Market research website Aarkstore has released a report on the global online advertising industry, which said it has benefited from the rapid emergence of social networking sites and is growing rapidly despite the economic slowdown.
Aarkstore stated: "In terms of online ad spending by geography, UK, Netherlands and the pan-European sector lead the market but in terms of internet ad budget allocation France, Germany, Spain and Italy have a strong presence."
The report singled out the advances in rich media as a reason for the leap in popularity of online marketing and states that search engine ads account for almost 80 per cent of the online market.
It also pointed out that internet marketing and advertising accounted for one-third of all advertising spending in Canada last year.
Earlier this week Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said the micro-blogging site would not even contemplate the idea of having adverts on the site, despite the possible profit that could be made.
