Open ID has received a big boost as it is being adopted by Facebook as part of the social networking sites' web design reforms.
Facebook joins other high-profile Web 2.0 figures like Google which have adopted the relying party as it quickly becomes an industry standard.
Open ID allows a user to log into multiple applications through a single source. So if someone was logged into their Gmail account they would automatically be signed into their Facebook account when they visit the site.
New Facebook users will also be able to register for the site through their Gmail account.
Facebook engineer Luke Shepard said: "We've always believed that making the user experience as secure, lightweight and intuitive as possible, which 200 million people can comfortably enjoy and understand, is one of our top priorities."
The changes come days after Facebook announced a series of web design changes to its applications section, with new developments, such as an application directory, meant to streamline the site.
