Web users' gender may determine their preferences regarding website qualities, a new study has suggested.
According to researchers at Southern Illinois University, while both males and females prioritise usability when it comes to surfing the web, women prefer sites that are accessible and have easy navigation while men opt for speed over other factors.
Customisation was found to be the least important web design element for both males and females, although slightly more women preferred this quality than men, reports WebsiteOptimization.
The experts at Southern Illinois University said women tend to use the internet to nurture relationships while men use the web to gather information, which may be why they look for different things in websites.
In the UK, more than 20 million males will use the internet by the end of 2009, compared with 19.3 million women, according to figures released by eMarketer earlier this year.
This is likely to rise to 22.1 million males and 21.6 million females by 2013, it said.
