E-commerce sites 'benefiting from falling pound'

E-commerce sites with international delivery offerings are well placed to take advantage of the collapse of the pound, according to the Times.

The newspaper reports that large e-commerce firms such as Amazon and Asos are seeing an increasing proportion of their online revenues come from international markets.

Smaller retailers operating via eBay are also capitalising on the sterling's lower value to serve consumers living in non-UK countries.

IMRG chief executive James Roper called the lower pound "a golden opportunity for British retailers", with Asos chief executive Nick Robertson noting that one of the main benefits of e-commerce is being able to sell to a wide audience without opening bricks-and-mortar shops.

Asos recently recorded a 173 per cent increase in international sales for the four weeks to April 24th.

In the UK, e-commerce sales were up 19 per cent in March 2009 compared with the same month last year, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.ADNFCR-1093-ID-19143581-ADNFCR
