Social media marketing 'gathering steam despite recession'

Social media marketing continues to increase in popularity, despite the recession, the E-Commerce Times suggested this week.

According to the publication, a "growing number" of firms are forgoing traditional forms of advertising and marketing, opting instead to use social media as a way to drum up business.

Social media marketing offers a number of benefits, allowing technology to boost traditional word-of-mouth marketing in a cost-effective way.

Citing a recent report from the Aberdeen Group, the news source suggested that at its most effective, social media marketing increases consumer awareness "in an exponential manner", as consumers are transformed into brand advocates.

The study found that some 68 per cent of Best-in-Class firms are investing at least as much as they had originally budgeted in social media marketing, while some 69 per cent are also currently involved in search engine marketing.

Earlier this week, the Phoenix Business Journal reported that a number of firms are shifting their advertising dollars online, rather than to radio and television campaigns.ADNFCR-1093-ID-19095845-ADNFCR
