Yahoo! is working to make sure it hits on the right design to use for the relaunch of its homepage by testing 141 different layouts, it has emerged.

Speaking to Thomas Weisel analyst Christa Charles, Yahoo! chief executive Carol Bartz said her company is looking for the homepage design that will be the most likely to keep users on the site, paidContent.org reports.

She also revealed that the current Yahoo! homepage uses 33 different code bases and hinted at the possibility of hiring someone to lead a shift towards a common platform and application programming interface.

Patricio Robles of Econsultancy called the figures "truly amazing" as they suggest Yahoo!'s testing is likely to be complex.

"That Yahoo! is using multivariate testing on an overly complex homepage that is built using a less-than-ideal hodgepodge of code bases hints at just how important Yahoo! feels getting its homepage 'right' is," he commented.

Last year, Yahoo! announced that users of its My Yahoo! personalised start page can now customise the page with applications from third-party brands.ADNFCR-1093-ID-19094232-ADNFCR
