Some of the UK's biggest businesses could do more to make use of social media tool Twitter, according to a new study.

Research by ntl:Telewest Business showed that 19 of the top 100 technology companies in the UK use Twitter, compared with all of the top ten US technology firms that do so.

Stephen Beynon, managing director of ntl:Telewest Business, noted that companies such as Mozilla and Sun Microsystems have already demonstrated how Twitter can be used as a business network-building social media tool.

"There is no longer any excuse for not embracing social networks to share news, recruit employees and even monitor and respond to users who are praising or criticising them," he remarked.

US shoe retailer Zappos deployed Twitter last year by not only setting up its own account on the microblogging site and integrating it into its own website, but also by collecting together tweets from its employees.ADNFCR-1093-ID-19091676-ADNFCR
