UK consumers are likely to increase their spending on online purchases in spite of the recession, new research has suggested.

According to Logan Tod's third annual Online Shopping Index, 65 per cent of UK consumers are planning to spend more on e-commerce purchases in the next 12 months, with most of this growth to be driven by those aged 45 and over.

Shoppers in the south-west will increase their online spending by the highest proportion overall, while the research also indicated that online retailers offering cheap delivery, money-saving offers and high quality product descriptions will be the most likely to attract the most sales.

"With more and more people becoming accustomed to shopping online, it is no longer good enough to simply let the strength of your products drive your sales and traffic," said Matthew Tod, chief executive at Logan Tod.

UK e-commerce spending rose by 13 per cent year-on-year in February 2009, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.ADNFCR-1093-ID-19085171-ADNFCR
