The UK launch of Google's Street View product resulted in a 41 per cent surge in traffic to Google Maps yesterday (March 19th).
This is according to Hitwise, which said that Google Maps became the 20th most visited site in the UK thanks to the publicity surrounding the launch.
Each user spent seven minutes and six seconds on average on Google Maps yesterday, compared with five minutes and 28 seconds for the day before.
Traffic from news and media sites quadrupled on launch day, helping Google Maps to see record traffic.
"The site received 7.9 per cent of its traffic from news sites, with BBC News the second largest source of traffic overall," said Hitwise research director Robin Goad.
Google's launch also included the introduction of Street View in the Netherlands.
The UK version covers 25 major UK cities, including Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford and London.
Partner organisations for the launch included the Tate museum, VisitBritain and the Mayor of London.
