Microsoft has launched the first full release of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8).
The browser is available as a free download from today (March 19th) and comes with an array of new features, including enhanced security, a private browsing mode and visual search suggestions.
Other new offerings include the Web Slices feature, which lets users access updates from their favourite sites as soon as they log on to the internet, and Accelerators, which act as in-page shortcuts for common tasks such as email.
"With IE8, we are delivering a browser that gets people to the information they need fast and provides protection that no other browser can match," said Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer in a statement.
Google launched the latest beta of its Chrome browser earlier this week.
In terms of browser market share, IE has 67.44 per cent of the sector, while Firefox has 21.77 per cent, Safari has just over eight per cent and Chrome 1.15 per cent, according to Net Applications figures.
