Twitter's popularity has increased to the extent where it is now more popular than websites belonging to some of the UK's largest newspapers.
This is according to Hitwise, which revealed that Twitter moved up from 66th to 54th place last week in its list of the most visited websites in the UK.
Robin Goad, research director for Hitwise, explained that the microblogging service now attracts more visits than sites for the Guardian, the Times, the Sun and the Telegraph.
Twitter is also increasingly becoming a source of traffic for these same websites, while also being a source of news itself.
Mr Goad said: "During February, 9.6 per cent of Twitter's downstream traffic went to news and media websites and 41 per cent of that went to the news and media – print sub-category, which is dominated by the newspaper sites."
Twitter's UK growth has increased sharply this year, as reflected in search data provided by Google Trends, according to Pingdom.
