Report: Newspaper developing e-commerce project
E-commerce
30 January 2009
The Telegraph is looking into e-commerce as a way of boosting its website revenues.
Brian Harrison of the Telegraph Media Group told a recent event held by the Association of Online Publishers that the newspaper had tested an initiative that saw e-commerce links inserted next to news stories on the site, Paidcontent.co.uk reports.
He revealed that the trial had been successful and went on to add: "For a lot of publishers - and I would include national newspapers in this - they have become remote from transactions and making money from online becomes tricky."
The scheme is believed to be a way for the newspaper to prop up revenues that are suffering due to the decline of traditional online marketing channels such as display ads.
It is similar to another initiative launched by YouTube last year, which also saw e-commerce links placed next to videos, through which users could purchase music and other items featured in certain clips.
