Report: More SMEs launching e-commerce sites

A rising proportion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are utilising e-commerce as part of their retail operations.
This is one of the findings of a new survey by pfa Research for e-commerce firm Actinic, which revealed that more than third of SMEs now have an online retail websites compared with 11 per cent in 2006.
Two-thirds of those with an e-commerce website in place said their online operations turned a profit, while 22 per cent of all SMEs said they had firm plans to launch their own retail website in the future.
Six in ten online SMEs were found to design their own websites. About 70 per cent said they chose a bespoke web design solution.
"The take up of e-commerce will be significant in 2009 as it is the only channel where profits and growth are still on the up," said chief executive of Actinic Chris Barling.
Both turnover and orders placed enjoyed double-digit increases among SMEs trading online in November and December last year, Actinic recently revealed.
