Accessible web design 'to go mainstream in 2009'

Web Design

22 January 2009

The issue of accessible web design will become more important in 2009 thanks to a number of trends and factors that took root last year.

This is according to Opera's Bruce Lawson, who wrote in a ZDNet UK column that the recent launch of the updated Web Content Accessibility Guidelines by the World Wide Web Consortium is the first factor that will turn the spotlight on accessible web design this year.

Meanwhile, the introduction of the Web Accessibility Initiative Accessible Rich Internet Applications standard will help to boost accessibility in the area of Web 2.0 apps, with the growing popularity of mobile web browsing also set to be a major influence, Mr Lawson said.

Furthermore, last year's out-of-court settlement by US retailer Target regarding a complaint over the accessibility of its e-commerce site will also force more companies to look at the issue to avoid similar legal action, he added.

This year will also see the publication of a new set of web design accessibility guidelines by BSI British Standards, the first draft of which is currently available for interested parties to comment on.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18987438-ADNFCR
