IE dominance 'hindering web design'

The web design sector may be negatively affected by the continuing dominance of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser, according to the European commission (EC).
In a statement of objections sent to Microsoft last week, the EC said that tying IE to the dominant Windows operating system on PCs could mean that web browser competition, consumer choice and product innovation are being reduced within the European Union.
It added: "The ubiquity of IE creates artificial incentives for content providers and software developers to design websites or software primarily for IE, which ultimately risks undermining competition and innovation in the provision of services to consumers."
Microsoft was criticised by the EC in 2004 for bundling Windows Media Player with the Windows platform, a complaint that was upheld by the Court of First Instance in 2007.
In a statement released on Friday (January 16th), Microsoft said it strived to fully comply with European law and that it would submit a written response to the EC within two months.
