Apache hosted the most websites out of all of the servers examined by internet services firm Netcraft in January.

Figures from the company reveal that Apache was home to almost 95.7 million of the 185.4 million websites detected by Netcraft in this month's survey.

Microsoft, however, saw its share of the market decline to 63.1 million following the expiration of two million blogging sites running on Microsoft IIS.

Google came third with 10.4 million sites in total, while nginx and httpd rounded off the rest of the top five.

"GFE, which is primarily used by Google's Blogger service to publish blogs under the blogspot.com domain, lost nearly 600,000 sites," Netcraft commented.

Overall, the number of sites detected by the firm this month fell by an "uncharacteristic" 1.2 million compared with December.

The most reliable hosting companies last month were New York Internet, Westhost.com and Hosting 4 Less, according to separate Netcraft figures.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18980512-ADNFCR
