Apple appears to have started to approve third-party web browsers for the iPhone, according to reports.
MacRumors revealed earlier this week that the technology company has begun to approve browsers made by other companies for launch on the App Store.
The website suggested that these applications - which include the Edge Browser, Incognito, WebMate and Shaking Web - were allowed through Apple's rigorous vetting process because they did not substantially duplicate the functionality of its own Safari web browser.
"This could open the door for mobile versions of prominent web browsers such as Opera and Firefox, though there remain other SDK restrictions that could prevent full-featured versions of those browsers from appearing," Arnold Kim of MacRumors commented.
Meanwhile, rumours have surfaced that Apple could be set to launch a 'nano' version of the iPhone that is significantly smaller in size than the current handset.
The speculation began after a report in DigiTimes cited the Economic Daily Times stating that Apple may place orders for components for the new iPhone with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics.
