Yahoo! has appointed former Autodesk chief executive Caroline Bartz to replace Jerry Yang in the top job at the internet services company.
The appointment is effective immediately and will result in Mr Yang returning to his former role as chief Yahoo.
Ms Bartz was chief executive of Autodesk - which produces 2D and 3D design software for a range of sectors - for 14 years in total.
She eventually became the company's executive chairman and is also director of Intel, Cisco Systems and NetApp.
As part of the management changes, Sue Decker will step down from her post as president of Yahoo!.
Yahoo! chairman Roy Bostock said that Ms Bartz "is the exact combination of seasoned technology executive and savvy leader that the board was looking for".
The appointment comes shortly after speculation over whether Microsoft will renew its takeover bid for Yahoo! resurfaced recently.
Yahoo! rebuffed Microsoft's initial bids several times over the course of 2008.
