Google has launched a new open source version of its Sitemap Generator for webmasters.
The new tool is able to look for new and amended URLs on a specific website to create up-to-date sitemaps by examining data such as web server traffic, log files and files found on the server.
XML, mobile and code search sitemaps can be generated with the application, while pings for modified URLs can also be sent to the Google Blog Search service, webmaster trends analyst for Google Zurich John Mueller said on the Webmaster Central Blog.
The Sitemap Generator is a plug-in that is able to be installed on Linux/Apache and Microsoft IIS Windows-based servers.
Mr Mueller said: "We're excited to release Google Sitemap Generator with the source code and hope that this will encourage more web hosters to include this or similar tools in their hosting packages."
Submitting sitemaps to search engines could speed up the website crawling process and potentially make new pages appear in search listings quicker, according to the SEOmoz blog.
