Amazon led the way in terms of e-commerce traffic in the UK over Christmas, new statistics from Nielsen Online have revealed.

According to the research company, 15.6 million unique visitors headed to Amazon every month in the final quarter of 2008.

Other e-commerce websites that had high levels of unique visitor traffic included Argos, Tesco and Play.com.

The mass merchandisers category was the most popular overall on the web, with sites in the apparel/beauty and home and garden sectors also proving attractive for internet shoppers.

Year-on-year growth in traffic to all of the major online retail sites in the study stood at 37 per cent in 2008.

"It's not that online retail will be impervious to the tighter financial environment but it has an opportunity to weather the storm better than other elements of the economy, particularly if retailers promote the web as the best way of finding cheaper goods in the most efficient and convenient way possible," said Nielsen Online's Alex Burmaster.

Non-food sales conducted via the web, telesales and mail order rose by 30 per cent year-on-year in December, according to the British Retail Consortium.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18970970-ADNFCR
