E-commerce activities among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) resulted in significant growth for these firms during the Christmas shopping period, a new poll has indicated.

Actinic surveyed SMEs with online operations on how they performed over Christmas and found that, on average, respondents reported a 48 per cent rise in turnover and a 43 per cent increase in the total number of orders placed.

"The survey results confirm analysts' pre-Christmas expectations that the percentage growth in online shopping would once again far exceed growth in high street sales," Actinic managing director Nick Kington explained.

Deloitte predicted last year that online spending in the UK would reach a total of £4.7 billion over Christmas, representing a ten per cent increase compared with 2007's figure of £4.2 billion.

Online shoppers planned to spend £773 each in total over the 2008 festive period, compared with £655 for the total UK population, Deloitte noted.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18958816-ADNFCR
