Top intranets 'harnessing social media in web design'

Web Design

06 January 2009

Companies are increasingly utilising social networking features as part of their intranet web design projects.

This is according to the Nielsen Norman Group, which runs an intranet web design content every year and found that the most recent set of entrants relied more upon social networking capabilities than those in previous years.

Such features include Facebook-style employee profiles, allowing users to add personal videos as YouTube does and blogs by both managers and lower-level staff members.

However, the majority of blogs hosted by intranets were found to be written by chief executive officers (CEOs), with HSBC Bank Brazil's CEO blog seeing more than two million hits and 8,000 comments since it was launched three years ago.

Usability expert Jakob Nielsen stated: "Social networking ideas pioneered on the open internet are being applied today to intranets not just for the sake of offering the latest and greatest features, but because they deliver true business benefit."

Winners of the contest included Advanced Micro Devices, BASF, McKesson and Deloitte.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18958573-ADNFCR
