Today's most popular web browsers are set to undergo significant changes in the next few years, according to comments made by one expert that may interest web design professionals.
Speaking to BetaNews, Doug Heintzman, director of strategy at IBM Lotus, suggested that browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome will become more sophisticated.
While these applications are already incorporating features that the earliest browser makers could only dream of, there are still several areas of potential improvement, Mr Heintzman said.
These include business logic flow, thread control, synchronisation, replication and authorisation, he commented.
"With Chrome, Google is doing some very interesting things around multiprocessing and multithreading support," the expert said, adding: "We'll also see functionality being added through plug-ins."
Last month, Matt Poepsel of e-commerce software firm Gomez warned retailers that failing to ensure e-commerce sites work properly across a range of browsers could lead to lost sales this Christmas.
