Mobile social networking 'on the increase'

Web 2.0

22 December 2008

Usage of social networking on the mobile web has risen considerably in the past few months, Orange has revealed.

The operator's latest Digital Media Index indicated that some 166 million monthly page impressions were recorded between July and September on average, representing a significant increase compared with the period between November 2007 and January 2008.

Mobile music downloads also rose by ten per cent, while usage of mobile search increased by 30 per cent - implying that businesses could do well to refine their mobile search engine optimisation strategies.

"This latest report reflects a transition in mobile similar to what is taking place on the web - mobile is no longer simply a channel for brands to deliver packaged content in a manner of their choosing," remarked Paul Jevons, Orange's director of products, portals and services.

The third quarter of 2008 saw take-up of the mobile web grow eight times faster than that of the traditional desktop-based internet in the UK, according to Nielsen Online.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18942587-ADNFCR
