E-commerce websites will enjoy a spike in online spending by Britons on Christmas Day, according to IMRG.

The retail association said that consumers are likely to spend more than £103 million on the web on December 25th as they look to take advantage of this year's festive end-of-year sales.

Last year, shoppers spent about £84 million on websites such as eBay, Amazon, Argos, Play.com and Apple iTunes, IMRG noted.

Hitwise UK research director Robin Goad said Christmas Day and Boxing Day are becoming more important for web-based retailers year-on-year.

He added: "Given the current hunger for bargains, it seems likely that both days will be even busier this year."

The first four weeks of November saw UK traffic to retail websites rise by ten per cent compared with the two months preceding the start of the Christmas shopping season, according to recent figures from comScore.

Auction site eBay was found to be the most popular retail website overall.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18942582-ADNFCR
