Yahoo!'s open strategy advances further

Yahoo! has taken further steps to reinforce its commitment to a more open strategy.

The actions include updates to a number of existing services and products, as well as new features.

Yahoo! Mail now features a "smarter" inbox that highlights messages and other content considered to be particularly important to the user, while the Yahoo! homepage is now able to be personalised with third-party applications.

Meanwhile, the Yahoo! Toolbar has been updated with a number of new offerings, include tailored search suggestions and a greater focus on vertical search.

Users can also view their friends' activities on the Yahoo! network through Yahoo! Updates.

Ash Patel, executive vice-president of Yahoo!'s audience product division, said: "By opening up to third-party innovation on Yahoo!, we are also providing new opportunities for publishers, developers and ultimately advertisers to reach and connect with more than half of the world's online population."
