About half of all companies intend to spend more on their marketing strategies next year, according to a new study.

The survey by StrongMail Systems revealed that internet marketing is particularly likely to see an increase in budgets in 2009, with 73 per cent of firms to up investment in email marketing and 44 per cent to do the same for search engine marketing.

It was also found that businesses largely intended to reduce expenditure on marketing campaigns that do not offer the targeting opportunities posed by other channels, such as general advertising and trade shows.

Bill Wagner, executive vice-president of business operations at StrongMail Systems, stated: "It's telling that in this tough economic climate, a majority of marketers are actually planning to increase their spend on email marketing."

Online advertising spending is on course to reach £3.35 billion in the UK this year, in spite of the economic downturn, according to figures from research company eMarketer.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18930336-ADNFCR
