The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has welcomed a new report from ZenithOptimedia suggesting that global online advertising will grow by 18 per cent next year.
According to the report, this is compared with an overall drop of 0.2 per cent for the whole advertising market.
Guy Phillipson, chief executive of the IAB, said that the forecast was "very encouraging" for the internet marketing sector.
"In the UK we expect [internet's] share [of total media] to be a world-leading 20 per cent in 2008 and this will continue to grow past TV in 2009," he commented.
The ZenithOptimedia report also suggested that online advertising spending will rise by 12 per cent in Europe and by 18 per cent in North America.
Another recent forecast from investment banking group Collins Stewart predicted that growth in spending on search engine marketing will outpace that of the overall internet advertising sector in 2009.
