Web design 'should consider target audience'

E-commerce web design should be planned to ensure it targets the right consumers during the festive shopping season, experts have advised.

Gloria Moss, a marketing specialist and ex-lecturer, explained to the Western Mail that males and females respond differently to the same websites.

Citing University of Glamorgan research from 2005, she noted that men tend to favour straight lines, the use of few colours and formal typography when it comes to website design.

The study also found that both men and women respond favourably to websites incorporating feminine designs, Ms Moss said.

"Therefore, businesses wanting to target both genders should adopt a more feminine approach as a default option for their website," she added.

Meanwhile, Richard Houdmont of the Chartered Institute of Marketing for Wales said that it was important retailers used the right content and design to appeal to both the target audience and other potential markets.
