The start of the Christmas shopping season has resulted in a surge in traffic to e-commerce websites, new research has found.
According to comScore, ten per cent more consumers visited e-commerce sites in November compared with September and October, although visits to a number of retail websites declined when compared with November last year.
Retailers eBay, Amazon, Apple, Home Retail Group - which consists of Homebase and Argos - and Tesco were the five most popular e-commerce sites last month.
Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore, said that low consumer confidence and tighter levels of disposable income meant that retailers faced a "tough season".
"However this is a notoriously resilient industry and the retail markets appear to be showing signs of life in Europe as [the] Christmas shopping season kicks into high gear," he added.
The most searched for technology product on the web in the run-up to Christmas is currently Nintendo's Wii Fit game, according to Hitwise.
