E-commerce 'on the rise' in the UK

Most UK retailers now have a transactional e-commerce site, according to Deloitte.
The consulting company released a report showing that 81 per cent of retailers had an e-commerce site in 2008, up from 71 per cent last year and 51 per cent in 2006.
Furthermore, while 56 per cent of businesses said that the online medium contributed less than ten per cent of all sales, over one-fifth noted that e-commerce accounted for more than a quarter of their revenues.
Nine in ten firms predicted higher e-commerce sales for their organisations in the future.
Director of retail consulting at Deloitte Anish Patel commented: "Although online retailers are well positioned to make the best of a potentially lean Christmas, their online strategies need to be sophisticated and well-executed, focusing on better customer insight and innovative marketing."
According to Hitwise, a growing number of Britons are searching for second-hand goods on the web in an effort to save money during the economic downturn.
