New research has revealed that about 50 per cent of businesses have not backed up their websites in case of an emergency.
The research was carried out in Canada by Leger and IT services firm Fusepoint and surveyed 800 senior business executives about their reliance on their corporate websites.
Six in ten respondents said their firms' dependence on their websites increases every year, while one-third stated that they thought e-commerce business on their sites would jump by 15 per cent on average this Christmas season.
However, 47 per cent of executives had seen their websites suffer from downtime in the past, while one-fifth said their brand reputation and sales would be damaged if their sites went down for more than an hour at a time.
Randy Fougere, vice-president of Fusepoint, commented: "Corporate web sites are a vital avenue used to reach consumers and communicate with customers and they must remain accessible and available 24/7 - especially in an economic climate where organisations must make every dollar count."
Larger organisations are more likely to back up their websites online compared with smaller businesses, according to an In-Stat survey reported by Byte and Switch in June.
