Web users 'prefer black and white pages'

Websites that lay black text on a white background are preferred by one-third of web users, according to a new survey.
Black-on-white schemes were found to be particularly favoured by male internet users in the poll by the University of Northern Iowa and the Electronic Document Systems Foundation.
In addition, younger web users were discovered to prefer websites with a colour scheme that laid coloured or white text on a dark background, while older consumers plumped for the traditional dark text on light background combination.
Dr Carl Nelson Blue of the University of Northern Iowa, who headed up the research, said that the findings were particularly important given that a range of sectors are now shifting to digital platforms.
"An understanding of usable colours will be a vital part of creating software and websites," he stated.
Contrasting foreground and background colours that enhance accessibility are recommended by the World Wide Consortium.
