Social commerce 'helping consumers find online bargains'

Social media is one of the main ways in which online shoppers hunt down internet bargains, according to a new study.

Compiled by Synovate for web consultancy Guidance, the survey's findings showed that nearly 30 per cent of US shoppers favour using social networking sites, user comments and link forwarding to grab the best deals online.

Furthermore, the youngest and oldest age groups surveyed - 18 to 24-year-olds and over-65s respectively - were found to be most dependent on forwarded links to internet bargains.

"There's a huge opportunity here for retailers to employ a social commerce strategy that gets peers talking to each other about the deals they're finding," stated Jon Provisor, chief technology officer at Guidance.

According to a recent e-commerce report from IMRG and Capgemini, Britons will spend £13.2 billion online in the run-up to Christmas this year - up 15 per cent compared with 2007 in spite of the economic slowdown.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18870274-ADNFCR
