UK-based internet retailers are becoming more aware of the benefits offered by mobile websites, new research has suggested.
One-fifth of the companies surveyed by Sponge said they had previously built mobile microsites to support new promotions, reports Retail Bulletin.
Four in ten respondents admitted that they were considering utilising or had already used mobile web design to create portals for consumer information purposes.
The survey also suggested that retailers could do more to take advantage of the mobile web, with 20 per cent stating that their mobile sites are capable of conducting e-commerce transactions, despite most firms using mobile channels to communicate with customers.
Jon Beverley, commercial director at Sponge, remarked: "Retail is a service industry and whether purely online or multichannel, mobile can help inform, manage expectations and reduce the pressure on customer service departments."
Email and search are the top two mobile web activities for European handset owners, according to a study published by Nielsen Mobile in August.
