A new report has forecast higher online sales during the Christmas period compared with last year.
Britons are expected to spend some £13.2 billion on internet purchases in the final three months of 2008, up 15 per cent compared with 2007.
Online sales in the clothing, footwear and accessories category will drive this growth, as well as those in the alcoholic drinks sector, IMRG and Capgemini said in their latest report.
December 8th will represent the height of online shopping activity this year, with consumers expected to spend £320 million on goods online on this date.
James Roper, chief executive of IMRG, noted that consumers will spend over £1 billion online every week in the run-up to Christmas - despite weak economic conditions.
"The internet is well established as one of consumers' most powerful economic weapons against tough times," he said.
A recent report from e-commerce solutions provider Hybris suggested that e-commerce organisations would do well to adopt a multi-channel marketing strategy this year to reach new target audiences and improve brand awareness.
