Facebook leapfrogged the BBC to become the fifth most popular website in the UK during September, according to new statistics.
The social network attracted more than 18.4 million unique visitors during the month, compared with the BBC's 18.2 million visits.
Google remained the most popular website overall, with almost 31.2 million unique hits, followed by Microsoft, Yahoo! and eBay.
In terms of website categories, politics saw the greatest growth in unique visits compared with August - 27 per cent - as a result of intense interest in the US presidential election.
Business and finance online trading sites also saw a 22 per cent increase in UK traffic due to the economic crisis.
The US election gained a wide internet-based audience in the last few months, with this reflected in both website visitation and search trends.
According to recent Hitwise data, Sarah Palin attracted the greatest number of UK online queries out of all four presidential and vice-presidential hopefuls in the last month.
