New figures from Net Applications have revealed that Mozilla's Firefox now accounts for more than a fifth of the overall web browser market.
The popular alternative browser saw its share surpass the 20 per cent mark for two weeks in October, while market leader Internet Explorer (IE) experienced a decline to 71 per cent.
According to ZDNet's Joe Brockmeier, the milestone is significant because there are still a number of websites that have developed specifically for IE.
"Those of us using non-Microsoft platforms need sites that support more than IE, but it's hard to make a case for doing the extra testing if you can't show a sizable user base," he explained.
Mozilla has also this week added a new feature to the second beta version of Firefox 3.1, a private browsing mode that lets users surf the web without leaving evidence of the sites they have visited on their PCs.
