Brits to spend more online this Xmas, says report
E-commerce
23 October 2008
The UK e-commerce sector will benefit from £7 billion of consumer spending this Christmas, new research has suggested.
At a presentation for property consultancy EC Harris, Verdict Research revealed findings predicting that online sales will grow by nearly 40 per cent this Christmas compared with last year.
It attributed this to the growing convenience of online shopping and the wider penetration of residential broadband.
Online food and grocery vendors will see a particularly bumper Christmas this year as consumers spend £2.2 billion on food items bought over the web, Verdict added, noting that supermarkets will also benefit from higher sales of non-food goods.
The figures were announced shortly after IMRG and Capgemini unveiled statistics showing that spending on internet purchases rose by 14.8 per cent last month, driven by expenditure on clothing, electrical items and alcohol.
UK consumers spent £4.8 billion in total on online goods in September, according to the figures.
