Online retail websites need to ensure they are well-placed to meet new consumer needs as the economic crisis starts to hit internet sales, it has been claimed.

The latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index has shown that UK online sales rose by 14.8 per cent last month, down on last year's figure of 73.2 per cent.

According to the statistics, the clothing, footwear and accessories category saw a 24 per cent month-on-month sales rise, while the electrical goods sector enjoyed an 11 per cent increase.

IMRG managing director Jo Evans advised e-commerce organisations to refine their operations in light of the fact that consumers are increasingly looking for bargains online.

She said: "Online retailers will need to ensure that they are prepared and ready to meet their customers' requirements by providing good product display and availability, with easy to follow payment and delivery information, in order to make the most of the current situation."

This follows a report released by Hitwise last month indicating that price comparison websites and searches for energy-saving tips are becoming more popular in the UK as consumers seek to find new ways of saving money.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18838693-ADNFCR
