Online auction site eBay dominated Hitwise's latest pay-per-click (PPC) search term rankings last month, it has been revealed.
The company accounted for "over 88 per cent of the online traffic generated by paid listings on the variations of the term ebay", according to Hitwise's Anita Gandhi, demonstrating that eBay has "a keen understanding of the value of buying brand terms".
A total of 0.12 per cent of paid clicks were attributed to ebay, while 0.02 per cent were generated by ebay.com - the two top terms.
Home depot was third, also with 0.02 per cent, ahead of map quest and people search with 0.01 per cent each.
In Hitwise's organic search list, ebay ranked fifth with 0.23 per cent, behind myspace (0.78 per cent), craigslist (0.42 per cent), myspace.com (0.29 per cent) and youtube (0.26 per cent).
It was reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier this week that eBay may be planning to buy classified ads businesses in order to boost its own presence within this sector.
