'Integrate website usability from the beginning'

Businesses should steer themselves away from the belief that they can integrate usability after a website has been created, an expert has urged.

Speaking to IT Week, usability consultant Mona Patel said that it is better to consider users' needs before the design process begins, rather than wait until later when more work needs to be done.

She commented: "If a client has a problem with the checkout, for example, or wants to improve the way users navigate round the site to increase cross-selling and up-selling opportunities, we need to understand the stakeholder vision for the site and what the hurdles are in getting there."

Meanwhile, David Hamill of User Vision said in a recent article for Precision Marketing that usability can be negatively impacted upon by severe branding guidelines if they hamper the user experience.

This can include the use of specific colours or fonts that match the company's corporate brand but do not add to the website's usability, he explained.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18712951-ADNFCR
