There is no way to escape Microsoft's virtualisation software charges, a leading analyst has said.

According to Forrester Research, firms are stuck with paying licence fees for running software on virtual setups, networkworld.com has reported.

It said analyst, Christopher Voce, told delegates at the internet research company's IT forum: "If you are getting any benefit from Microsoft's software, you need to have a license, whether that benefit is for physical machines or virtual machines."

Vitualisation software allows computers to run separate operating systems on their desktops. It is useful for solving incompatibility issues and helps web developers test their sites on different setups.

However, the policy of some vendors is restrictive, claimed a recent report from the Burton Group, because it fails to allow their programs to work on virtual machines.

"There is an abundance of user angst and uncertainty surrounding the licensing and support of applications running on x86 virtualized environments," networkworld.com reported Burton Group's analyst, Chris Wolf, said.
