Ten million people aged over 50 are being encouraged to get online today as part of 'Silver Surfers' Day (SSD) 2008.
The initiative hopes to get people surfing who have yet to get an insight into the internet.
The event is managed by Digital Unite Limited in partnership with regulator, Ofcom.
Digital Unite has produced resources to aid new web users taking part in the multitude of smaller events across the country.
"SSD is all about demystifying technology and opening the doors on the digital world, in particular the internet," it said.
Older users who remain ignorant to the progress of the web could find themselves excluded from its increasing role in society.
According to recent government statistics, there is still a large difference between the number of young and older people accessing the internet.
Its estimates showed, in 2007 "there were only four per cent of the 16 to 24 age group who had never used the internet, compared with 71 per cent of the 65+ age group".
