Web 2.0
21 May 2008
YouTube is the UK's most popular social media site, attracting 11.6 million people in April, it was reported.
The video-based site had more views than Facebook (10.2 million), which topped the social network poll and attracted double the visitors than nearest rival, MySpace (4.7 million).
Alex Burmaster of Nielsen Online, which conducted the study, warned that to keep their audiences the major players have to constantly innovate.
"Social media consumers are 'the fast and the curious' – always looking for, and moving to, the next social media service that can meet the need to organise and showcase their lives and interests more effectively," he observed.
Further analysis of Nielsen's research found net traffic to blogging site, Wordpress, increased by 128 per cent to two million unique users, while visitors to MySpace dropped by 31 per cent year-on-year to 4.7 million.
