BBC could shame ISPs

The BBC could shame ISPs if they 'shape' content made available for consumers through its iPlayer.

The warning came from the broadcaster's director of future media and technology, Andy Highfield. He suggested they pass additional streaming costs on to consumers and made it clear the BBC would not help them pay their bills.

"I would not suggest that ISPs start to try and charge content providers," he warned.

"Content providers, if they find their content being specifically squeezed, shaped, or capped, could start to indicate on their sites which ISPs their content worked best on (and which to avoid)."

iPlayer has been hugely successful and is part of a new generation of media player, which provide television-like services direct to users' computers.

This causes difficulties for ISPs, which are struggling to meet rising traffic costs and have promised some subscribers unlimited downloads.
