EC wants online Europe debate
Web 2.0
03 April 2008
The European Commission wants citizens to use the web to get more involved in European affairs.
In a communication entitled Debate Europe – building on the experience of Plan D for Democracy, it suggested launching on-line networks and increasing the use of its internet discussion forum.
"The policies of the EU affect everyone's lives, whether through its regulations on subjects such as mobile phone roaming charges or through the free movement of people or goods or any other of the EU's many achievements," said Margot Wallstrom, vice-president for institutional relations and communication strategy.
The internet networks will provide a platform for European, national, regional parliamentarians, journalists and other opinion makers to share their knowledge and ideas.
Plan D was launched in 2005 as a response to 'no' votes from France and Holland to encourage dialogue between member states.
BT has recently announced the start of its upgrade to the UK's internet provision. It is installing its 21CN network, which will allow connection speeds equal to those on the continent.
