Google faces "semantic web"

Google's days as a search provider could be numbered if the latest prediction by the World Wide Web's creator comes true.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee has predicted a future organised by a "semantic web", which would see internet connectivity built into any data, he told the Times.

"In the semantic web, it's like every piece of data is given a longitude and latitude on a map, and anyone can 'mash' them together and use them for different things."

He went on to predict that social networking sites would become just one of many networks. " I think after a while people will realise that there are many other things you can connect to via the web", he commented.

He also expressed his concerns about internet crime and predicted "a new tipping point where different types of crimes become possible and lucrative".

Sir Tim is regarded as the father of the World Wide Web along with Californian Vint Cerf, who now works for Google.
