OPA reveals top sites

Web 2.0

04 March 2008

The Online Publishers Association (OPA) has investigated the most popular sites on the web.

It introduced a new Community category to its analysis and found that that sites such as Facebook and MySpace accounted for only 7.5 per cent of the time users spent online.

The firm's Internet Activity Index revealed that users spent more time on commerce (16.1 per cent), communications (28.7 per cent) and spent nearly half their time (42.7 per cent) browsing content.

"The addition of Community reflects the increasing popularity of sites such as MySpace and Facebook that don't clearly fit into a single existing (Internet Activity Index) category," said OPA president Pam Horan.

Advertisers are hoping that social networks will provide them with opportunities to engage with their customers and promote new brands.

Research by Nielsen Online has revealed that Google is the top internet brand, followed by Yahoo! and MSN/Windows Live.
